FRIEND OR FAUX?






	INTRODUCTION

	










The Verge, a leading publication from Vox Media, is known for its in-depth coverage of technology, including consumer tech, AI advancements, and more. The Verge reached out to me to create visuals for this thought-provoking feature article “Friend or Faux?” by Josh Dzieza, which follows the stories of individuals who have developed romantic attachments to AI chat bots and explores the psychological complexities of these relationships.&#38;nbsp;
	


	THE MISSION

	


For this deeply fascinating and equally heartbreaking article, The Verge needed visuals that would capture the essence of human and AI relationships without relying on stereotypical sci-fi tropes. The challenge was to convey the emotional depth of these relationships—ranging from the comfort they provide to the ethical complexities they raise—in a visually compelling way. The visuals had to avoid clichés while embracing the unsettling, uncanny elements inherent in AI technology.&#38;nbsp;The Verge sought out my work due to my creative process and my use of projection mapping technology along with practical effects. They wanted me to use these techniques to create eerie, surreal visuals that would complement the story’s exploration of AI’s place in human relationships using tools that aligned with them as a publication.

I created six videos that were vivid, immersive, and unsettling—capturing the emotional and psychological layers of the article and of AI relationships. Each video was placed within the article, complementing the corresponding sections and enhancing the reader’s experience by offering visual representations of the complex themes.

	THE PROCESS
	
	IDENTIFYING THEMESThe process began with an analysis of the article's key emotions and themes. The core idea was to visually express the all-consuming nature of having a "crush” on someone. This theme became a cornerstone of my visual approach, prompting me to create a series of dreamlike floral worlds and domestic scenes to represent the highly romantic and intoxicating nature of infatuation.


The final visuals included six distinct assets.

A visual representation of the anxiety surrounding the impermanence of AI companions, who could be “turned off” at any moment.

	

THE PROCESS
	PRACTICAL EFFECTS, PROJECTION MAPPING &#38;amp; AI VIDEO TECHNOLOGYEach scene was created using fresh flowers, florist tools, studio lighting, and projection mapping to craft dynamic, immersive environments. One particularly challenging but rewarding aspect was the creation of the AI companion itself. Working with The Verge’s Senior Designer Cath, we designed an AI companion to feature in each of the scenes. I used Runway’s image-to-video AI software to bring her to life. The goal was to capture that eerie "human-but-not-quite-human" look that’s so characteristic of AI companions, with their unnaturally smooth skin and oddly perfect features. The process of creating these videos often created glitches and imperfections that echoed the instability of AI technology itself. I embraced these technological errors and incorporated them into ‘Fragmented Fantasy’.

	CLOSING THOUGHTSThis project was an exciting and deep exploration of the intersection between technology, emotion, and art. By blending practical effects, floral artistry, and cutting-edge AI techniques, I was able to create visuals that not only complemented The Verge's feature article but also pushed the boundaries of how AI technology can be used in visual storytelling. The visuals were met with widespread praise, both from The Verge team and from the public. The underlying themes expressed through the imagery connected with viewers, many of whom commented on them across social media. The personal and immersive nature of the videos helped deepen the article’s impact, illustrating the unique emotional dynamics of human-AI connections. 	‘RAINFOREST OASIS’ LIMITED EDITION SCENT LAUNCH



	INTRODUCTION
	Wild, a sustainable bathroom brand, introduced the limited edition "Rainforest Oasis" scent in Q2 2024, featuring body wash and deodorant. The campaign aimed to transport customers to a tropical paradise, reinforcing Wild’s eco-friendly ethos through sensory-driven visuals.
	


	THE MISSION
	










I was tasked to create immersive, rainforest-inspired imagery for the campaign. Collaborating with Wild's creative team, we developed ad concepts that transformed the bathroom into a lush oasis. Using real plants, orchids, and moss, I styled and built a vibrant tropical scene in the studio to visually represent the Rainforest Oasis experience.


	

	THE OUTCOME
	The final images, bathed in golden light and mist, captured the essence of the Rainforest Oasis Scent. These visuals were utilized across Wild's marketing channels and advertisements, enhancing their brand perception and reinforcing Wild’s sustainability message.

	Wild is the trailblazing refillable bathroom brand on a mission to eradicate single-use plastic from our daily routines. They are best known for their flagship product, refillable deodorants, made from natural ingredients and proudly vegan. Wild has won the hearts of environmentally conscious consumers looking for sustainable personal care options.












"Rainforest Oasis" is a body wash and deodorant scent introduced during Wild's Q2 2024 limited edition launch. Wild aimed to revitalise customer engagement and attract new customers by transporting them from their bathroom to a lush, tropical paradise with each use of the Rainforest Oasis deodorant and body wash. To convey the sensory allure of the rainforest through digital platforms, I was tasked to create an immersive and visually stunning campaign that would resonate with their audience and enhance their brand identity

We conducted collaborative ideation sessions, during which the in-house creative team and I worked together to develop social media ad concepts around inviting viewers into a world where the boundaries of a bathroom disappeared and a rainforest emerged. I brought these concepts and Rainforest Oasis to life in the photography studio by constructing a lush rainforest. I used real plants, fresh orchids, and layers of moss to create an immersive environment that felt like it was from the heart of Brazil.

My efforts resulted in a collection of soothing and misty product imagery. The scene was bathed in golden sun rays, casting an ethereal glow upon the products and evoking the earthy, invigorating scent of the rainforest. With careful attention to detail, I managed every aspect of the shoot, from arranging the foliage to composing each shot, ensuring a seamless integration of the products with the environment. The images served as a testament to Wild’s dedication to product quality and sustainability.

This campaign's creativity significantly improved from their Q1 limited edition scent launch. Customers responded positively, enhancing the perception of Wild. FLOATING FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS






	INTRODUCTION

	










A series of floating floral arrangements illuminated with video projection. This project is a blend of my talents as a florist, my love of lighting with my passion for practical effects and video projection.

The mission of this project was to push myself creatively. Revisit my love for floristry and blend it with my new found passion for video projection.

This project has been key in developing my style and expanding my knowledge of projection mapping, lighting and video editing. Work from this series caught the attention of Adobe who then approached me to create a video for their offical Tiktok account.

	INTRODUCTION
	THE PROJECTLucid Suspensions is a series of floating floral arrangements illuminated with video projection. In this self initiated project, I blend my skills in floristry with my interest in practical effects and video projection. Each arrangement takes a day to create. I purchase the the flowers in the morning, take them home, make my installation, add projections, then capture. Through doing this project, I learned different projection techniques then I tested them out and practiced on each arrangement. 
The process of making each arrangement, projecting onto it and capturing it with my camera is so enjoyable, it has become a regular creative exercise for me.

THE PROCESS
	
CREATING THE ARRANGEMENTS

I use fresh flowers, so seasonal availability and budget are the first things I consider before selecting. Floristry like design (and all the arts) is a combination of the elements; scale, contrast, repetition, composition and so on. I like to think about these elements when I select the first flower. I evaluate its shape, texture, and visualise how it could be used in an 
arrangement before selecting flowers that complement it.

For example, in Chloris I was initially drawn to the Andromeda which is a very textural flower so I felt it couldn't be the feature of the arrangement. So, I chose roses as the feature because they contrast the andromeda in size, shape, and texture. With the rule of odds in mind, I threw in Star of Bethlehem as an accent flower because they create a lovely swooping movement which contrasts and complements both the andromeda and roses. Floral arranging is like getting dressed for a party, you pick the thing you are most excited to wear then base everything else around that one feature piece.

While the flowers hydrate, I hang the backdrop, set up my lighting equipment and spray paint any florals if needed. The design is built onto an armature made of wire and hung by fishing line. The flowers are threaded through this armature and secured with a little water vial. This part of the process tends to be open to change. Stems break, flowers resit placement, sometimes I have to run outside and find something to add. When going into design I have a general idea of how I want my arrangement to look but it almost always turns out to be different than initially imagined and that is part of the fun.

	THE PROCESS
	LIGHTING AND PROJECTIONI used two different projection techniques for this series. The first was a simple no mapping approach using animations I created in After Effects. I projected these custom clips around my subject and filled the room with fog. This technique resulted in animated light beams moving around the arrangement.

Custom Animation I created in After Effects and how it looks projected around Paeonia.

For the second technique, I use a combination of both custom animations and Lightform generated effects that are part of the Lightform Creator software. To avoid going into too much detail, watch this video where I share my creative process and how I use the Lightform LFC to make my work. As a final touch I like to add some atmospheric lighting and colour to show off the shape of the arrangement, making it feel more dynamic.

I love in camera effects, so I decided to use a kaleidoscope filter and a prism to explore more experimental imagery. I find this hands on approach to shooting really fun because it opens up opportunity for surprises unexpected things you can work with while editing.

Once my footage is shot, I select my key moments, assemble them in a timeline and use content aware fill in After Effects to remove the string. You can find examples of my final versions on my social media pages here, here, and&#38;nbsp;here.&#38;nbsp;

	THE IMPACT

	ADOBE COMMISSIONThe release of Chloris caught the attention of Adobe and who asked me to create an arrangement for the offical Adobe Tiktok account. This video accumulated 500k views in one week and to over 1 million in two weeks. In that video I shared how Adobe was essential in the creation of Paeonia + Apollo.&#38;nbsp;You can watch it on the official Adobe Tiktok account here.

	STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRI &#124; A WILD LIMITED EDITION SCENT


	INTRODUCTION
	Wild, a sustainable bathroom brand, introduced the limited edition "Rainforest Oasis" scent in Q2 2024, featuring body wash and deodorant. The campaign aimed to transport customers to a tropical paradise, reinforcing Wild’s eco-friendly ethos through sensory-driven visuals.
	


	THE MISSION
	










I was tasked to create immersive, rainforest-inspired imagery for the campaign. Collaborating with Wild's creative team, we developed ad concepts that transformed the bathroom into a lush oasis. Using real plants, orchids, and moss, I styled and built a vibrant tropical scene in the studio to visually represent the Rainforest Oasis experience.


	

	THE OUTCOME
	The final images, bathed in golden light and mist, captured the essence of the Rainforest Oasis Scent. These visuals were utilized across Wild's marketing channels and advertisements, enhancing their brand perception and reinforcing Wild’s sustainability message.

With summer approaching, Wild is preparing for its busiest season, taking advantage of the excitement of sun-soaked holidays and refreshing getaways.












With summer on the horizon, Wild was gearing up to launch a limited-edition scent that captures the essence of vacation vibes. "Strawberry Daiquiri" – a tantalizing fragrance inspired by the iconic summer cocktail. Eager to captivate their audience and attract new customers, Wild seeks to infuse its brand with a touch of seasonal flair and excitement, making a splash in the market with its latest offering.

This campaign began with a collaborative brainstorming session to conceptualise attention-grabbing ad campaigns highlighting the brand's unique selling propositions. Working closely with their in-house copywriter, I developed multiple ad concepts tailored to resonate with the target audience. Drawing insights from past performance data, I crafted compelling visuals and narratives that showcased the effectiveness of Wild's natural deodorants. From building a miniature beach set in the studio and capturing dynamic splashes of strawberry daiquiri, every asset and process step was planned and executed.

My efforts culminated in an array of visual assets that captured the essence of summer bliss. From four paid social media assets to a captivating website landing page and eight e-commerce product shots, each image exuded warmth, fun, and the irresistible allure of a refreshing strawberry daiquiri! Despite their standalone nature, the images seamlessly complemented each other thematically, creating a cohesive visual narrative.

	Frank Green is on a mission to stop the use of single use plastic. They aim to do this by creating beautifully designed and environmentally sustainable products that you love to use and reuse. Frank Green gives their community the power and desire to make choices that contribute to helping humanity move towards a more sustainable future.

In 2021, neon is having a moment. The designers at Frank Green tapped into that moment with the goal to present it back to the world in the form of chic bright reusable bottles and cups that offer a ‘pop’ of colour to your everyday. The Frank Green team approached me with a maximalist concept, requesting that I shoot in my signature lighting style at Labassa Mansion in Melbourne, Australia.

A series of daring images and videos that feel high fashion and fun.



 
	



	THE IMPACT
	This campaign truly set them apart from their competitors. It was 










picked up by Vogue Australia and generated a buzz amongst their audience on social media. 	INTRODUCTION
	Wild, a refillable bathroom brand focused on reducing single-use plastic, partnered with UK television personality Stacey Solomon to launch a limited-edition deodorant scent.
	


	THE MISSION
	










I was tasked to create photography that reflected the collaboration's essence, focusing on Stacey’s vision and the floral ingredients of the scent. As a creative photographer with a background in luxury floristry, I carefully selected and arranged florals to bring Stacey’s "floral whispers" to life. Through studio lighting, I created sun-kissed, dreamlike garden imagery.


	

	THE OUTCOME
	Two serene, peach and pink-toned images set against a blue sky, conveying tranquillity and elegance. These assets boosted Wild’s marketing and demonstrated their ability to collaborate with high-profile influencers. The project was completed in just four days.

	Wild is the trailblazing refillable bathroom brand on a mission to eradicate single-use plastic from our daily routines. They are best known for their refillable deodorants, made from natural ingredients and proudly vegan. Wild has won the hearts of environmentally conscious consumers looking for sustainable personal care options.












Wild's decision to launch a limited-edition deodorant scent in collaboration with Stacey Solomon, a well-known UK television personality and influencer, was a strategic move. It wasn't just about introducing a new product; it was about partnering with a beloved figure to tap into her audience and pave the way for potential high-profile future collaborations.

	THE PROCESS














My process began by immersing myself in Stacey's world to understand her brand and vision for the scent. As a non-UK citizen, I didn't know much about Stacey. So, I started by learning about her personality to ensure our creative direction resonated with her persona. Once I had a clear vision in mind, I moved on to preparing for the shoot. My background is in luxury floristry, so upon learning of the individual florals Stacey selected for the scent, I could easily identify which varieties of these blooms resonated with her most. For this shoot, I selected the best lush garden roses and sourced the finest peonies and fragrant jasmine to bring Stacey's "floral whispers" to life. Using studio lighting techniques, I captured the essence of a sun-kissed garden, creating the feeling that a breeze was passing through the flowers, carrying a dreamy floral scent.

Two stunning images that go beyond the typical deodorant product launch. With peach and pink hues set against a serene blue sky, these images convey a sense of tranquillity and elegance. My goal was to create a dreamy floral scene that you can almost smell through the screen.

This shoot was conceptualised, shot, and completed in just four working days. GINKLET: CREATURE CHRONICLES

‘Ginklet’ is the weird and wonderful brand of handmade ceramic art by Molly Melican based in Victoria, Australia. Her ceramic pieces are a gang of misfit homewares whose personalities, expressions and temperaments bring joy to any corner, table or surface. Expertly crafted, each piece is made with a personality in mind. No two Ginklet pieces are the same.

This was a passion project I created for myself as a way to improve my sense of composition and skills in set styling. Each Ginklet sculpture has its own unique personality making it the ideal subject for crafting a story and then expressing that story through photography and set design.

By the end of this project, I improved not only my ability to compose compositions, but also refined my creative process from ideation through production. This focus on process, enabled me to hone my craft and flex my creativity through building sets using a variety of techniques and materials. This project also strengthened my ability to listen to, interpret, and physically manifest ideas, both my own and the clients, making it an incredibly valuable experience in collaboration and production.

Above-ceramist Molly Melican AKA Ginklet

I reached out to ceramist Molly Melican (AKA Ginklet) to see if she would allow me to photograph and bring her characters to life as part of a self directed passion project. By doing this project, my aim was to improve my skills in set styling by creating challenging photo set ups in line with the personified sculptures. In addition to applying my knowledge in photography and lighting, I worked with my hands and physically build four different scenes that work harmoniously as a collection and reflect the back stories of the pieces provided by their creator. To make the images feel like a unit they needed to have feature that carry between them, which I decided would be similar lighting, depth, placement of sculpture and props; specifically a hanging element in the front left. 


I created four different scenes which were informed by the personalities of each sculpture and by my conversations with Molly. I built them all in my little home studio and then captured in both photo and video formats.

Happy-Sad Man is my personal favourite and was the most challenging to create because he was the only sculpture that didn’t have a clear backstory. Due to his happy and then sad nature, he had to have something happen to him and the set needed to tell the story of that transformative event. After several beers with my partner at the pub, we landed on this idea that Happy-Sad Man has been working on a joke to tell at the school talent show. He is feeling optimistic as he goes up on stage and then totally bombs. It is a tragic tale and a fear that everyone knows.

The mood board I created to help me visualise Happy-Sad Man.

To tell the story of Happy-Sad Man, I had to build a talent show scene. To begin this process, researched images of theatres and talent shows to give me an idea of props and help me envision what the stage could look like.

The most important feature of the stage stage was the spinning pedestal that the sculpture sat on. Happy-Sad Man needed to spin around after telling his joke to reveal his sad face. This informed my decision to build the stage entirely out of foam core so I could cut a hole in the bottom and hide a Lazy Susan underneath which enabled him to spin around after the delivery of his joke.

With the assistance of my wonderful partner Antony, we then created the main stage wall, made props like a little microphone, stars and letters which were then painted. I dressed the miniature stage and once it all dried, it was time to shoot.

Happy-Sad Man has one short video and two still images to tell his story. I’ve become very attached to Happy-Sad Man now that I have told his tragic story. He lives with us in our home.

For this image, I built &#38;amp; photographed a psychedelic medieval woodland scene using moss, mushrooms, wood and projected lighting. The theme of this image was inspired by the chainmail jewellery worn by the sculpture, designed by Sacred Steel Armour.

The process in making this was fairly straight forward. The landscape was built onto of two polystyrene sheets and covered with moss. I decorated the landscape using various store bought mushrooms, blossom branches, and discarded wood found on the side of the road. Three lights and one projector were used to light the scene and I created a short animation to give the light a twinkling feeling.

Molly pulled inspiration from “Creature of the Black Lagoon” to create Swamp Man. As soon as she told me this, I could immediately picture him sitting on top of a soggy mound overlooking a beautiful and eerie swamp. I imagined him to be the more awkward but sweet reclusive cousin of the Creature From the Black Lagoon who has befriended the flowers and plants that live around him.

Me creating the botanical scene in my home studio.

To create this, I researched images of swamps, bogs and wet lands to get an idea of the plants and colours that make up these areas. I took inspiration from the landscape shots and applied my 7 years of experience as a florist to build a lush botanical scene. Everything was built on top of an acrylic mirror to give the feeling of stagnant water. To make it feel a bit mystical and eerie, I used dry ice which slowly crawled across the mirror. For the mud mound where Swamp Man sits, I built an armature out of chicken wire and newspaper. I packed the armature with a moist peat moss and designed the landscape with a combination of fresh flowers and plant cuttings. For the tree canopy, I used fabric and a combination of fresh and artificial plants which were hung using backdrop stands.

This was Molly’s favourite of all the sculptures in this collaboration and is one of the two images that we styled together. The aim for this scene was to create a nostalgic feeling for childhood birthday parties based off of the reference images Molly sent me prior to the shoot. These images were my main source of inspiration and informed what props were required to build the scene. 	CONCLUSION
	
	The most rewarding part of this project was refining my creative process. Because each image required so much building and creation, I had to be methodical in my approach and have a very clear idea before I even started. As a result, I have become a stronger stylist, set designer and collaborator. MAKING EASTER MAGIC






	INTRODUCTION

	










Loving Earth is an ethically driven company that makes bean-to-bar whole food chocolate from regeneratively grown cacao. Their products are of high quality, simple, and close to their natural state. Meaning, they contain no inverted sugars, glucose, or stabilisers. They develop relationships with grower communities around the world to source the finest ingredients to make their plant-based chocolate bars in their solar powered factory.

For the 2022 Eater campaign our mission was to make Loving Earth the go to Easter chocolate for health and environmentally conscious. We planned to achieve this through providing spectacular imagery to our stockist for their newsletters, websites and social channels in addition to promoting our own online campaign.

Assets were widely adopted by our core retailers and distributors for their personal newsletters and social channels. It was great to see Loving Earth at the top of so many newsletters and promoted above the competition largely in part to producing so many assets to their stockists.

	OVERVIEW
	A FRESH RANGE OF FLAVOURS &#38;amp; AN EGG HUNT
The core collection of flavours included: Raspberry Dream, tangy raspberry, covered in cashew mylk chocolate. Tropical Creme, a fruity fiesta of passionfruit and pineapple covered in mylk chocolate and Magic Minis, 12 solid cashew mylk mini eggs in a very adorable Easter box.


In addition to the core collection, we hosted an Australia wide egg hunt featuring our Boobook Chocolate Eggs where we hid 6 pink foiled wrapped eggs in 6 different Boobook Chocolate Egg boxes. Those who did would win a year’s supply of chocolate and a wild Australian animal adopted in their name through WWF. The Boobook Chocolate eggs support the Great Forest National Park campaign; to declare the Mountain Ash forests to the east of Melbourne CBD, a National Park.

	THE PROCESS
	CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The idea for this campaign was inspired by a marketer friend who advised that our campaign would likely perform better if we utilised some cheesy holiday props like a bunny or easter basket. They personally found that the campaigns that did this, generally did better than the one’s that didn’t. So I decided to take the advice and proposed to create super kitch nostalgic angle to this years easter campaign where I would create a gaudy but glam scene to show off the bright fun packaging.

The mood board I created to help me visualise the kitch Easter vibe I was going for.

	

	
	PRODUCTION
To give that classic easter feeling, I used a glitter paper to create the feeling of grass, then used grass bunnies to reenforce that feeling. The prop pulling it all together was the tacky 80s easter basket and over the top bow I tied thanks to all my years as a florist.

This scene was super easy to light. Literally, one sharp light was all I needed for the camera and star filter to pick up those sharp stars and shadows in the scene.

	


	

	
	POST-PRODUCTION
There was a fair amount of image retouching for this project. The white backdrop was replaced by clouds, the seam between the glitter foam was removed and the horizon line fixed.

For the Boobook Egg Hunt, I wanted to show how all there is a pink egg in only a small number of boxes, so I created this isometric grid with several Boobook boxes but only one with an egg, this image was created through a series of several images, each box was cut in photoshop and then placed digitally to create the grid.

	BOOBOOK EGG HUNT LAUNCH VIDEO
This whole campaign wouldn’t be complete without an 80s infomercial inspired launch video. I was laughing myself silly while creating this clip. There is something about a rotating display stand shot that will never ever ever get old to me. To hear audio watch and listen on the offical Loving Earth Instagram account.







	

	

	SECONDARY VIDEO CONTENTTo build the Easter hype, I captured and edited video content of the chocolate factory showcasing both the placing of the pink eggs and share a little BTS on how the bigger eggs are made. Both of these videos performed really well on social media. Their audience loved seeing a little behind the scenes and the placing of the egg video made the hunt feel very very real.

	Sales were up for the Boobook Eggs and these creative assets were widely adopted by our core retailers and distributors for their personal newsletters and social channels.
